Dr Susan House Wade will present an illustrated talk exploring how exotic botanical specimens from Japan came to England. Japanese plants began to be sold commercially on a large scale by the early 20th century, and this impacted far more than gardens. These plants and their products inspired a whole range of decorative arts. Ceramicists, graphic designers, illustrators, textile designers; everyone was swept up in the fashion for Japanese plants. And their influence was widespread.
