The Camerata Chamber Choir will be returning to Wolverton Manor for a concert this Saturday, 17th November.

The venue makes for a wonderful event for both the performers and the audience. Mark Patterson, genial resident of the Manor and one of the greatest music patrons on the island, invites music lovers in to his great house’s Great Hall.

Filled with regular and fresh audiences, the division between performer and listener in this intimate space becomes less tangible. This Saturday, the finely blended Camerata voices will fill enduring Elizabethan and modern music to the hall’s 400-year old oak panels to make the evening a rich choral delight.

The performance will start in the 1500s with the god-fearing progenitor of sacred renaissance music Tomas de Luis de Victoria, there will be equally holy works from the Scandinavian romantic August Soderman, and Francois Poulenc’s moving passion, Tenebrae Factae Sunt from the 1930s.

In the second half the choir will move on to songs by modern composers: Patrick Hawes and Camerata’s most recent guest conductor, Karl Jenkins.

In a new departure from the choir’s usual high-brow repertoire, the concert will also feature a pop song, from the 16th century by the papally knighted Orlando de Lasso. In this popular song, or madrigal, the pidgin Italian words form a coarse love poem written by a young German immigrant soldier.

Camerata’s translation spokesman can reassure the more sophisticated concert-goer: ‘In this version he offers merely to KISS AND DANCE with the object of his affection, ALL NIGHT LONG.’

And finally, a special treat. The première of Night, a piece written for the choir by the Lithuanian composer Vytautas Miskinis, to the eponymous William Blake poem.

The choir will be supported by the excellent local musicians, Michele Brock (piano) and Tressa Lambert (Soprano solo).

In aid of Leukaemia Research the concert is on Saturday 17 November at 7.30pm at Wolverton Manor, Shorwell.
