The History of the London Group: An illustrated talk by Tim Craven

This talk will examine the origins and significance of The London Group’s forerunner, The Camden Town Group, as a foil to the orthodoxy of The Royal Academy and New English Art Club. It will consider how the transition and change of name came about in 1913 before illustrating the various phases and fortunes of the group through the decades of the 20th century to the present, including its finest hour during World War 1 and the nadir of the 1970s.

As most of Britain’s best-known progressive artists either exhibited with or became members of The London Group, often when young and emerging, the talk is also a survey of successive modern art movements that parallel historic, national and global events.

The talk will conclude with a chronicle of more recent developments such as the centenary celebrations and a summary of how the group conducts itself today.

This talk will be approx. 1 hour long and there will be time for any questions afterwards. As well as a chance to view the London Group’s 111 Not Out exhibition currently on display in our West Gallery.

Tickets are £4. Free entry for students, this talk is aimed towards 16 years +
