Orpheus Singers, one of the leading chamber choirs on the Island, is presenting a concert on the theme of SAINTS AND FLOWERS at All Saints’ Church, Freshwater PO40 9BP on Saturday 25th June 2016 at 7:00pm.
The concert forms part of All Saints’ Flower Festival and is given in support of Ability Dogs 4 Young People, the Isle of Wight charity that trains assistance dogs to enhance the independence of disabled young people and children living on the Island. There will be a demonstration of their work during the interval.
“The concert will be a lovely, summery one full of flowers and delightful music,” said Philip Fryer, conductor of the choir. “With the occasion being All Saints’ Flower Festival, we wanted to select a suitable programme, and we feel the music we’ve chosen fits perfectly.”
Rural themes such as flowers are common in traditional English and European music, and the programme includes pieces by a number of English composers such as Wilbye, Parry, Stanford and Elgar. A high point will be a performance of Benjamin Britten’s Hymn to Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music and musicians.
In this Royal birthday year, the concert ends with Britten’s arrangement of the National Anthem, a fitting tribute to a great lady.
There are no tickets for the concert but there will be a retiring collection in aid of the Church and Ability Dogs 4 Young People.
