Sir james clark

The publication in 1830 of James Clark’s book The influence of climate in the prevention and cure of chronic diseases identified the Undercliff as having a microclimate that was suitable for people with chest complaints.

This led to the rapid development of Ventnor as a Victorian health resort, to the establishment of the Royal National Hospital for Diseases of the Chest at Steephill and St. Catherine’s Home and School in Grove Road.

Tuberculosis, then known as ‘consumption’, accounted for 25% of deaths in England.

Walk and talk
On Monday 26th October Richard Downing will lead a walk which tells the story of health and medicine in the Victorian Undercliff and relates that to the medical practices and conditions of the time.

The walk starts from the Esplanade pumping station at 10.30pm, covers 2.5 miles and takes about 2.5 hours.
