There area an increasing number of men who have or are facing health issues, social isolation and the difficulties associated with retirement after an active working life. The concept of a shed is to provide a place in the community where local men can share communal interests, usually around crafts and technical skills, but unlike their own garden shed where they work alone, the community shed introduces social interaction, an important part of social wellbeing.

The new Newport Shed will be based at Age UK IOW in the heart of Newport. There are also other sheds around the island and more being planned.

Men’s Shed is part of the Age Friendly Island initiative. Age Friendly Island is an exciting partnership funded by the National Lottery through the BIG Lottery fund making the Isle of Wight a great place to grow old, while tackling social isolation. Encouraging older adults to take an active role in their communities, and enabling their voices to be heard.
