Filmed at regular intervals over a 12 year period, Mason literally grows up on screen before our eyes. This beautiful and innovative film depicts boyhood in a series of snapshots of family life from starting school to his first day at college. Each year, director Richard Linklater returned to his home town of Austin, Texas to shoot scenes with the young actor Ellar Coltrane and his screen family of hard-working mum and feckless father.

As the boy becomes a man, we watch the changes in the world around him as in a time-lapse but the real achievement here is the way it captures the minor but universal milestones of growing up.
