INSPIRED exhibition

Quarr Abbey 5 – 10 March 2015 Open daily 10.30 to 4.30

It all started with a visit to Chichester’s Pallant House Gallery. In a side room was Dennis Creffield’s exhibition of monumental charcoal drawings of English Cathedrals. This so inspired a small group of Island artists that they decided to take their own look at Island churches and have met every Wednesday since early summer 2014 to sketch at one or other of our beautiful churches.

The group (Edna Coatsworth, Viv Garrett, Karen Taggart, and Sue Wadsworth) had met in Life Drawing class at Quay Arts where they were familiar with the use of charcoal, but soon found that they wanted to explore the use of other media too. The result is a delightful mix of a multimedia approach to a traditional subject and has been further enhanced by the addition of a photographer, Derek Rogers.

The work on display is a personal interpretation of each artist’s view of Island churches. Some pieces may be easily recognisable; others may need a more careful examination to identify the intermingling influences of several places. It’s all there: the towers, the spires, the bells, the windows, the woodwork and even the kneelers, all playing their part in what is an extraordinary new look at part of our Island heritage.
