Inspired by the Island’s special mixture of climate, beaches and seaside activities, Coastal Inspirations showcases five local artists’ personal responses to the Island’s unique coastline.

Wendy Hodges is inspired by the Island’s ever-changing light, extremes of weather and geology. She works in watercolours, oils, acrylics and pastels. Photography is also important in her work.

Sheila Luke captures the changes and movements in the sea in dramatic oils or acrylics, with some abstracts and material from the beach.

Mary Maunder uses paint, wood, cotton yarn and beach finds to create images and items inspired by the shapes, colours and textures around the sea shore.

Sandie Owens enjoys making things from found and recycled objects, treated with a variety of dyeing techniques, some of which can be unpredictably exciting.

Verena Sparrow merges draftsmanship and a range of mediums including dyed silk and appliqué, to express her fascination with rockpools.

Collectively their work is a captivating variety of treatments of familiar coastal scenes, sea-life and the Island’s maritime ambience.

Visitors can look into the background of some of the work by thumbing through accompanying workbooks. People can also create and photograph their own beach scenes using a selection of found objects and material.
