HMS Queen Elizabeth – Delivering the Nation’s Flagships
David Downs BSc, MSc, CEng, FRINA
In July 2014 HMS Queen Elizabeth, the first of the Royal Navy’s two 65,000 tonne aircraft carriers, was floated out of the dry dock in which she had been assembled at Rosyth, following construction in large structural blocks at six shipyards throughout the UK. There then followed, and is ongoing, around 18 months alongside in the non-tidal basin at Rosyth during which the ship’s systems will be commissioned prior to sea trials in 2016. The challenge now facing the Aircraft Carrier Alliance partners is to set the systems to work and bring the ship to life.
This presentation will describe the progress made in designing, constructing and assembling the ship and starting to commission systems.
